Lexus LS – What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Lexus LS ranks 2 out of 6 Super Luxury Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 107 published reviews and test drives of the Lexus LS, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Lexus LS offers one of the finest interiors available anywhere, and an options list longer than any of its major rivals. It’s powerful, but clearly trails European rivals in driving excitement. In May, Lexus announced that it was temporarily halting sales of the LS due to a glitch in the car’s steering system. Sales are expected to resume in June.

In the rarified class of Super Luxury Cars, every car does most things very well. Still, the Lexus LS has a distinct personality within that group. The only non-European entry, it offers the quietest, smoothest ride, the longest option list, and, to some reviewers, the most luxurious cabin. However, it can’t hold its own against its German rivals as a performance car.

The LS is driven by a powerful V8 engine (reviewers love its rumbling exhaust note, but you can only hear it from outside the car), and is available with a sport package that includes paddle shifters and a re-tuned, firmer suspension.

The LS is an outstanding highway cruiser and a lavish place to spend a commute, not an Autobahn-storming rival for Germany’s flagship sedans. For many, that will make it the best choice — the LS may be the best of the group at the things most owners need their car to do each day.

And its interior is simply opulent. All super luxury cars offer supple leather, but some reviewers say the grade of upholstery found in the LS is actually a step up from what other manufacturers build into their six-figure cars. Its cabin technologies also raise the bar, including what may be the best sound system available in a car, period.

But perhaps the most important note in its favor is the car’s value — the LS has the lowest starting price of any super luxury car.

Other Cars to Consider

Driving enthusiasts will want to consider the sharp-cornering BMW 7-Series, or the physics-defying Porsche Panamera, at this price point.

In terms of luxury, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a fitting rival, with its exemplary Drive Dynamic multicontour seats (they’re optional), and some reviewers say the Audi A8’s interior boasts craftsmanship equal to the Lexus.

Details: Lexus LS

For 2010, Lexus has made minor exterior changes — but even experienced auto writers say they’re hard to spot. A new sport package is offered, but while reviewers say it clearly firms up the car’s suspension and makes it sharper in the corners, it still won’t turn this car into a BMW.

The LS is available in a well-equipped base trim and extended-wheelbase 460L trim. A hybrid model, the LS 600h, is reviewed separately.

Be sure to check for current Lexus deals that may be available on a new LS.

“LS base prices start below those of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8. It is less sporty and more comfort-oriented than those German rivals, but Lexus’ flagship is a Best Buy choice for its power, refinement, standard features, and optional gadgets.” — Consumer Guide

“Lexus has been mildly – one could even say tepidly – updating many of its 2010 models with slight design revisions and new content to keep them fresh. The LS flagship gets some of these same tweaks, the most significant of which is a new Sports Package for rear-wheel-drive models that includes an upgraded suspension, 19-inch wheels and a unique body kit.” — Cars.com

“The Lexus LS line may be the quietest, most serene luxury car available. It offers an excellent combination of comfort, space, quietude, and features. It’s also the most electronics-intensive luxury car we’ve ever experienced and, if it weren’t a Lexus, that would give us pause. The LS 460 offers all anyone might want in a luxury car, and at a price that cannot be considered exorbitant.” — New Car Test Drive

“A top choice for a luxury sedan thanks to its blissful comfort, exceptional refinement and value. Maintaining the Lexus LS line’s reputation as an all-star are such exemplary traits as a silent and super-smooth ride, commendable engine performance, stalwart reliability and undeniable value among competing large luxury sedans.” — Edmunds

“Lexus’s LS-series sedans have long been highly regarded for their effortless ease, brilliant silence, and impregnable build quality. They’ve also been disparaged for being somewhat soulless. Technology lies at the core of that praise and that criticism.” — Car and Driver

LS Performance – 8.8 (Very Good)

The Lexus LS is remarkably smooth, and requires little effort to drive, even in extended-wheelbase trim. But the car’s designers clearly had a different set of priorities than the engineers behind most of its European competition. The LS is a luxurious highway cruiser with more than enough power for any driving situation, but it lacks the sporty character of most Super Luxury Cars. A new Sport package adds a bit of fun, but still can’t match what BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi offer in this class. Read More

LS Exterior – 7.7 (Good)

Lexus has made subtle updates to the sheetmetal of the LS for 2010, but the car is still an obvious descendent of the first Lexus, the LS400 that appeared more than a decade ago. It’s one of the most conservative-looking cars in a field filled with conservative cars. A new sport package makes the look a bit more aggressive, with a muted dark grille and lowered side rocker panels — but the LS has always emphasized a quiet sense of presence more than a bold sense of style. Read More

LS Interior – 8.8 (Very Good)

You may be impressed with other aspects of the car, but you buy a Lexus LS for its opulent cabin. Lexus cars are known for their fine interiors, and the LS is at the top of the Lexus lineup. Its standard interior is lined in supple leather that some reviewers say is softer than that found in other six-figure sedans — but buyers who aren’t impressed can upgrade with interior options like a built-in refrigerator, Alcantara headliner and the best sound system found outside of a Rolls Royce. Read More

LS Safety – NA

The federal government has never published the results of any crash tests performed on the Lexus LS. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has performed only a front-impact test, but gave the LS its highest possible score. The LS offers a full suite of safety technology including a class-leading 11 airbags, and a new telematics system that will automatically contact emergency services in the event of an accident. Read More

LS Reliability – 10.0 (Excellent)

The 2010 Lexus LS reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power’s automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). In May, Lexus announced that it was temporarily halting sales of the LS due to a glitch in the car’s steering system. Sales are expected to resume in June. Lexus covers its cars with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. Like most luxury car builders, Lexus offers services beyond the standard warranty, such as roadside assistance.

Lexus RX 350 – What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Lexus RX 350 ranks 1 out of 17 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 56 published reviews and test drives of the Lexus RX 350, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

For 2010, Lexus has redesigned its RX 350 crossover, making this the SUV’s third generation. The new model doesn’t represent a radical change — instead, Lexus has refined one of its best-selling vehicles by adding a few needed elements to keep it fresh and modern.

Reviewers say the RX 350 continues to offer one of the best combinations of powerful performance and interior luxury in its class. Changes for 2010 include a sleeker exterior, more spacious interior, a new six-speed transmission and double wishbone rear suspension, and five more horsepower for the V6 engine. “The RX is comfortable and especially stylish inside, with good cargo capacity and Lexus dealer’s reputation for superior customer service,” says BusinessWeek. “Crossover shoppers could do a lot worse.” Test drivers especially like the added horsepower and six-speed transmission, which make for stronger acceleration.

Overall, the RX 350 is an even more refined car than before — and, at several thousand dollars less than its competitors, it’s one that might be worth it for loyal buyers of Toyota’s luxury brand. In fact, the RX 350′s good value makes it our 2010 Best Luxury Midsize Crossover for the Money.

Details: Lexus RX 350

The RX 350 comes in front- or all-wheel drive. It’s also available as a hybrid, the RX 450h, which is reviewed separately. Though its gas mileage is substantially higher than the RX 350′s, the hybrid also costs nearly $5,000 more — so it would take many years to offset its price premium in fuel savings.

“The new model is easy to drive, has a refined cabin and is available with a host of high-tech features. I like the RX, and I continue to after driving this new model as it’s well-suited to the needs of the U.S. luxury-crossover buyer.” — Cars.com

“It’s a hugely competent car for people who don’t care about driving. Lexus continues to distill the RX down to the ultimately perfect luxury crossover, great if you’re into that kind of thing, but we are not.” — Jalopnik

“For people seeking refinement in a vehicle that boasts all the trappings of fine living with none of the crass exhibitionism of huge bling-mobiles, the RX holds considerable attraction.” — Popular Mechanics

While it’s unlikely the neighbors will be able to detect that the 2010 RX is all-new or that it’s crammed with about as much tech as the International Space Station, don’t worry — once behind the wheel, you’ll easily discern that the new model is the most impressive RX yet.” — Truck Trend

“There are certainly more entertaining, attractive and powerful ways to transport five people and their weekend getaway gear, but that’s never been what the RX is about. Simply put, it’s about the destination, not the drive. And because of that, the RX will continue to define the segment without ruffling the feathers of public’s consciousness.” — Autoblog

RX-350 Performance – 8.4 (Very Good)

The RX 350′s extremely smooth ride, powerful engine and excellent fuel economy earn it high praise for performance. “Delivering a comfortable driving experience is critical in the luxury crossover segment, and the RX is successful on this front,” says Cars.com. “Available with either regular or Sport suspension tuning, the 2010 RX has a new double-wishbone rear suspension that Lexus says improves handling performance.” Some reviewers note that the RX 350 isn’t much of a driver’s SUV — but then again, that’s not what it’s built to be. Read More

RX-350 Exterior – 8.0 (Very Good)

The 2010 Lexus RX 350′s sculpted, curvy exterior is updated only slightly for this year. It continues to be well liked by the critics and scores well within its class, bested only by the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. “There were some serious lines added to the new RX models, as well as a sports suspension package, to help Lexus try to lure more male buyers,” says the Detroit News. “The new look sharpens the crossover, while allowing it to keep its iconic profile.” Read More

RX-350 Interior – 8.8 (Very Good)

The 2010 Lexus RX 350 earns praise for its comfortable seating, clean dash layout, and overall quality. “Inside, the redesigned RX impresses with its intelligent use of space, cleanly elegant design and sharp controls,” says Road and Track. “Passenger room is generous, with seat and telescoping steering column travels accommodating the largest of drivers. Every expected amenity is provided and then some, plus two notably well-executed new options.” One of those new options is a navigation system with Remote Touch, a surprisingly easy-to-use controller that’s similar to a computer mouse. The second option is a heads-up display that projects navigation directions, audio information and vehicle speed on the windshield. Read More

RX-350 Safety – 9.9 (Excellent)

The 2010 Lexus RX 350 performs admirably in government crash tests and insurance industry tests. The RX comes with many advanced safety systems, including Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Read More

RX-350 Reliability – 9.0 (Excellent)

This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Yet the new 2010 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h seems uncommonly easy to operate. And they are brimming with new technology. If the RX were a computer, and in more ways than ever it is, it would have a plug-and-play operating system and an inviting, engaging user interface.

When driven back-to-back against the previous model it’s clear the new 2010 RX offers more than cosmetic improvements. Mechanical improvements for the all-new Lexus RX include an independent rear suspension, a 10-airbag safety system, a six-speed sequential transmission, and an improved all-wheel-drive system. Upgraded accommodations include better seats, integrated satellite radio, acoustic glass, automatic high beam control, and a heads-up display among other things. Many of the improvements are due to more and better computer logic for integrated control of driving systems such as the transmission, all-wheel-drive, navigation, steering and brakes. Perhaps the key interior upgrade is the introduction of a mouse-like controller which Lexus calls Remote touch. It’s used instead of a touch screen to operate climate, audio and the navigation system.

Compared to competing SUVs the RX 350 gets better mileage and cleaner emissions ratings. The RX 450h hybrid gets better mileage yet, and is among the cleanest vehicles yet devised by man.

The RX 350 and RX 450h are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive system is completely new, lighter and more efficient. It works electronically without the locking center differential in previous models.

The RX 350 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic multi-mode transmission. Compared to the current model, the RX 350 is a little heavier due to stouter rear suspension components, which provide upgraded crash performance.

Edging away from the current RX look, the 2010 RX 350 has a wider stance, with more pronounced front fenders and crisper lines overall. As in the previous generation, the grille is placed lower than the headlights, so the Lexus family resemblance carries on, but the headlights are more sharply defined and the roofline is flatter. In essence, the rounded egg-shaped body has been redefined at the corners to retain fluid RX cues in an updated format.

In the process, the new RX got slipperier, with a coefficient of drag, 0.33, down from 0.35.

The RX has a new keyless entry system that has a better-integrated sensor on the front doors. It looks sleeker, and the door handles themselves have been redesigned for a more comfortable grip. Fog lamps are integrated into the front bumper, and the outside mirrors are heated.

The RX 450h is distinguished by a different, more finely slotted grille and front bumper treatment, and by energy-saving LED headlights that are exclusive to the hybrid. Both the RX 350 and RX 450h have LED brake lights and turn signals, but the hybrid has auto-dimming outside mirrors. The 450h also has blue emblems and logos, and is available in an exclusive White Pearl color.

The RX comes with 18-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels with 235/60R18 tires; 19-inch wheels are available as part of the Sport Package or as a stand-alone option.

Interior Features

It’s strangely exciting to sit in the cockpit of the new Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h. There is a sensation of having so much to do, just like configuring a new computer. There are seating adjustments to lock in, preferences for the Remote Touch controller, operating modes to select and dashboard combinations to try out. We have a feeling an RX owner would be surprised to discover new features after months of ownership.

The RX comes to life with the push of a button. The instruments are bright and engaging, and shaded from outside light. The seats now have slightly higher side bolsters for support during cornering, but they’re still easy to get into. They feel firm at first, but medium-soft once you settle in, and are easily adjusted to a variety of positions. Mood lighting in the footwells and cabin supports a sense of quality and well-being.

The new cockpit provides a step up in sophistication, conveyed in part by a gifted design scheme that includes no straight lines or sharp corners. Every element of the interior is curved, arched or rounded in some way, so lines blend with subtle grace and harmony. California Walnut wood trim accents are mixed with three different interior color combinations, complementing black, light gray, and parchment tones.

The cockpit is divided into two separate zones. The first is for information functions, located higher up where they are easy to see. The second is for control functions, located lower and within easy reach of both front seat occupants. This division is made possible by Remote Touch.

The Remote Touch system is essentially a computer mouse. It’s located exactly where your hand would fall if your elbow were resting on the center console. This mouse will be immediately familiar to anyone who has used a computer. It replaces the need to reach out and touch the screen to use the Navigation system, or adjust audio or climate settings. We found it was simple to use while driving. It allowed us to avoid focusing on the navi screen to tune the climate control or turn down the volume. Plus, no more fingerprints on the screen.

The center console is bridge-like with open storage under the center. The shifter is immediately above the Remote Touch mouse.

There are a number of redundant hard buttons on the steering wheel, and at various points on the dash, 52 in all, but the Remote Touch mouse really does reduce the need to use them. Like a computer mouse, Remote Touch can be adjusted for sensitivity to your preference.

The navigation system is a sixth-generation version, with casual speech voice recognition capability for hands-free operation of audio, climate, and Bluetooth. The system runs from a hard disc, not a DVD, so it’s faster and allegedly smarter than the previous system. Among the improvements are easier phonebook transfer, voice command access to the phonebook, and smart auto-fill when selecting destinations.

XM satellite capability is built in, and the first three months are free when you buy the RX. Three services are available: real-time traffic, advance weather forecasts and XM Satellite Radio. It costs $23.99 a month to subscribe to all three services after the trial period.

The standard audio system has 9 speakers, a 6-disc CD changer and can play MP3 and WMA files from your iPod. A 12-speaker system comes with the navigation system, and a 15-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system is available for those who require an audio system consistent with the very best home systems.

The front seats now have longer cushions, with higher backrests, and are fitted with active headrests as standard equipment. The headrests are designed to adjust upward in the event of a rear-end collision, reducing whiplash. Because of the active headrests, rear-seat entertainment screens are independently mounted in pods behind the headrests. The two seven-inch LCD screens can operate separately so one passenger can play a game while another passenger watches a DVD. The seats are covered in fabric in standard trim, with leather and semi-aniline leather offered as available options.

One of our test units had seats covered in the consistently flawless semi-aniline leather, and we were hard pressed to find a misplaced stitch or shadow of stain anywhere. In fact, the leather is so supple and uniformly perfect we first thought it must be synthetic material. Regardless of the covering, both front seats are 10-way adjustable, with memory, and heated/air conditioned seats are available.

The rear seat can accommodate five and has a 40/20/40 fold-down split. The new design makes it easier to release one or both seats from the back, without having to walk around to the side, when loading cargo.

The rear seats also have a fold-down center console with a covered wood grain cupholder and separate covered storage compartment. The rear seats are shorter, with less reclinability than the front seats, but with good legroom for average-size adults like ourselves, much better than a seat on a 757 these days. There are four grab handles, one for each door. There are two rear air conditioning vents to cool the rear compartment.

Cargo room behind the rear seats has been slightly increased to 40 cubic feet, enough for four average golf bags.

When it comes to the interior, the hybrid 450h is essentially the same as the 350, except that the 450h has an Eco driving indicator that displays fuel economy using a bar graph. A hybrid system indicator replaces the tachometer to provide driving feedback.

Driving Impressions

Over the period of two days in Sonoma, California, we had the opportunity to switch in and out of standard a RX 350, both with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, plus an RX 450h hybrid, and a brief drive in the current RX 330. We spent most of our time in a Matador Red RX 350 AWD with the Navigation package.

Out on the road, the big V6 in the RX 350 responds well to throttle. Part of that is the new six-speed transmission, which has a lower first-gear ratio than the old five-speed, so it gets the RX quickly up to speed for merging or highway entry. Lexus told us to expect 0-60 times in the neighborhood of 7.4 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 15.8, and that’s about the way it felt. We didn’t go there, but top speed is electronically limited to 112 mph.

The transmission quickly selects gears based on throttle input, so you can ask for a gentle downshift just by giving it a little more gas. If you floor the accelerator, it kicks down two gears and moves out. It’s also possible to select your own gears in multi-mode shifting, but the automatic’s logic seemed so intuitive that we would probably drive in Auto 95 percent of the time, using the manual mode for downhill control on the highway or long uphill when heavily loaded. There is no V8 option for the RX, but if there were, we’d wager that performance would not be much improved, and mileage would suffer.

We did not feel much torque steer in the front-wheel-drive models, and particularly, the hybrid. Full-throttle starts in the previous hybrid elicited a waggle as various components of the powertrain kicked in that we found disconcerting. First, you’d feel the engine, then two electric motors, one after the other. These steering affectations are far better tamed in the new RX 450h. Our assumption is that the transmission’s computer is managing torque more progressively, and the flywheel is more heavily damped.

The RX 350 is not built for road racing, but more for passenger comfort. The new rear suspension, a double-wishbone independent, has a lot to do with that. Still, it has a nice, clean turn-in and good lateral grip for an SUV. The new RX is just a little longer than the old model, and stands 2.6 inches wider, so there is a noticeable gain in agility.

We expect Lexus vehicles to be exceptionally quiet, and the new RX is no exception. That said, the 19-inch wheels on the Sport Package do allow for more road input, and a little more noise and vibration seep through. The suspension is tuned slightly differently with the Sport Package, but the end result is still not as aggressive as Porsche’s Cayenne or the BMW X5. To us, that’s fine. We think SUVs are better at grocery-getting than corner-carving anyway. Bigger wheels, thinner tires and tighter damping tend to compromise Lexus ride quality and noise control, without delivering all that much gain. So our preference is for the 18-inch wheels.

Regardless of the tire choice, we found it easy to maintain a conversation using a low tone of voice at normal speeds. Lexus pioneered the science of quietness in a car, with the result that almost all cars are significantly quieter than they were five years ago. New tricks, such as optimized wheelwell damping coatings and fender liners, have been incorporated into the new RX. The underbody of the car has also received attention against wind noise. And the addition of a sixth gear in the transmission has allowed for quieter cruising, with less engine noise, on the highway.

All those things also hold true for the RX 450h, but because it is a hybrid, it regularly operates with the engine off altogether. During those times, noise reduction is even greater, bordering on eerie.

The brakes feel strong and progressive, with just a little squish at the top of the pedal before stronger grip kicks in. The hybrid brakes, which are regenerative, are now much more smoothly modulated than early hybrid brakes. The transition between light braking, when the generator reclaims power, and the serious stopping power that comes on when more pedal is applied, can still be felt, but you have to look for it.

Steering effort is light, but seems better proportioned than past electric steer-by-wire systems we’ve tested. It’s more accurate than before, especially at the center. The new power-assist logic is based on vehicle speed. The slower you go, the less effort required, so it can be just as appropriate in the parking lot as in the fast lane on the way to Las Vegas. Lexus uses the electric steering system on a number of its vehicles, because it reduces drag on the motor and thus, improves fuel economy. It’s also more compact, so there are packaging advantages, and once you have a computer controlling steering, you can add VDIM.

VDIM is not a system easily tested in normal driving, because it requires driving out of control, and then recovering. At which point, nothing will have happened, except maybe a brief flash of an icon on the dash. But it’s a system that looks at steering, braking, throttle and motion sensors in the cabin to predict what will actually happen, compared to what the driver is asking for. If there is any difference between the two, the system intervenes and selectively brakes individual wheels to correct the path of the car. It happens so fast you might not notice.

We’ve tested VDIM on race tracks and lonely dirt roads. It works without slowing down the car much, unlike VSC, which is the standard traction/stability control system. It’s an expensive option, but one we wish was on every car.

The RX is an easy SUV to see out of, and fairly easy to keep track of the area around the vehicle when backing up or parking. Driver visibility is enhanced by small windows in the A-pillar, and by small TV cameras that track the rear and passenger-side of the RX. One camera is located in the right side mirror, the other in the rear bumper. We found we could toggle between the two views, front and side, to see how close we were to the curb or pedestrians.

We found the RX to be a relaxed and comfortable ride, so we spent time trying out some of the new electronics systems.

We actuated the heads up display and found it makes it easy to stick to speed limits in unfamiliar ground. Bright white, high-contrast figures were easy to read, even heading into sunlight. It’s the best we’ve seen so far. It’s possible to project the display anywhere on the windshield; we liked it best low and to the left.

Voice recognition, something we’ve never really trusted, still takes a little getting used to, but the new system is much closer to something we might use every day. We began by asking it to switch to channel 143 on XM, which it had no problem doing. It also seemed to quickly be able to supply the nearest gas stations, although not the cheapest prices, and turn down the air conditioning. However, when we asked it to play Grateful Dead, it did not find the channel on its own, so evidently there are limits to Hal’s intelligence.

The RX 450h is offered in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, but the all-wheel-drive system is different; it incorporates a separate rear electric motor to power the rear wheels. Because it is a hybrid, the transmission is a continuously variable automatic and the brakes are different due to the need to regenerate electricity. And there are a few packaging and styling differences to consider when making a decision between the two. Because of the addition of electric motors, the RX 450h has 20 more horsepower than the RX 350, which compensate for a weight penalty of about 300 pounds.

From a purely economic point of view, the hybrid becomes attractive if you believe the cost of fuel will again rise sharply. The hybrid RX gets about 7 mpg better fuel economy, so it goes 134 miles farther on a tank of gas. That translates into a savings of $12.80 per tank if gas stays at $2 per gallon, or $25 per fill-up if gas goes back up to $4 per gallon. If the premium for the hybrid system is $4000, you would have to drive 83,700 miles before the cost is amortized. Over 100,000 miles, you would burn almost 1200 gallons less gas, but save only $786.

In short, dollar savings would be modest, even if prices rise. For that reason, most current hybrid buyers chose the vehicle because they want to drive the most fuel-efficient, cleanest SUV possible, one that reduces dependency on imported oil. The new RX450h takes that reasoning further, delivering up to 12 percent better fuel economy and 27 more system horsepower than the current-generation RX 400h hybrid. Total emissions are approximately the same as the current RX400h, even though the 450h has a bigger engine and more power. Which is to say extremely low.

The RX 450h we drove averaged 23.4 mpg over 120 miles of mostly around-town driving.

The hybrid brake system uses the same ventilated four-wheel discs in the RX 350, but has an electronically controlled regenerative brake feature that charges the batteries when the brakes are applied gently. The hybrid system includes ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and more important, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM) as standard equipment. We’ve tested VDIM on controlled proving-grounds settings, and consider it a remarkable safety system. It’s also available on the RX 350 as an option.

The hybrid can drive in three modes: Normal, Eco for best mileage, and EV Mode which allows the vehicle to operate on battery only. Lexus tech sources estimate the EV-only mode operating distance at about a mile. The EV feature is aimed at allowing the RX to be used as an electric car in closed urban areas where internal combustion engines are banned altogether, such as in Europe.

It’s quieter, safer, and more driver-friendly. And in our opinion, better looking as well. If you like the current RX 330, you’ll love the Lexus RX 350. It’s a good choice for people who don’t tow much or need to move more than five at time. The RX 450h offers a clear step forward in hybrid technology.

You may have heard that Massachusetts is rapidly becoming the home of Hollywood East…lately there’s hardly a time that movie crews aren’t scouting the towns and cities of our fair state for movie shoot locations. In fact, one day recently Herb Chambers Lexus received a call from a “big time movie location scout” who was looking to shoot a movie scene in “the finest automobile showroom in the world”!

Guess what? They chose our spectacular new Herb Chambers Lexus showroom on the famous “Automile” in Sharon, MA! When this facility was finished I knew it was a bit “over the top” as they say…but nothing was too good for our loyal Lexus customers and guests– the true fans of this magnificent luxury vehicle brand. To get back to my story, it turned out that they wanted to shoot a few scenes for the upcoming 2010 movie: The Zookeeper starring Kevin James (the star of King of Queens & Paul Blart: Mall Cop) in our new showroom! Well, what could I say but “yes, when would you like to start?”

No sooner did I give them the “green light” but it seems all of Hollywood arrived! Set guys, lighting guys, camera crews, loads of “assistants”, tractor trailers trucks, miles of cable, electricians, carpenters and more …it was truly transformational… and transform they did! You see this movie plot called for several scenes in a truly ultra high-end exotic vehicle showroom, (This place even had a bar!) the ultimate “Auto Toy Store” if you will. Sprinkled among the set, were several carefully positioned rare and classic cars…Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, a McLaren, Bentley’s, Maybach, a Porsche or two… and more. A car guy’s heaven!

The shooting and festivities went on for a few days…our Herb Chambers Lexus General Manager, Giovanni Tosti, and yours-truly even managed to be “extras” in a scene or two! I can only hope that we both don’t end up “edited” on the cutting room floor… no matter, we’ll look forward to seeing this hit when The Zookeeper premiers next year! And remember, at Herb Chambers… when it comes to your dream vehicle… We’ve Got It!

But Chambers, who never attended college, actually got his start selling copy machines, not cars, before he made the transition to dealerships in 1985.

“I’ve always loved cars ever since I was a child,” he said.

Despite the brutal automotive sales market, Chambers, who operates 45 dealerships across New England, has had a decent year by most accounts. October sales were up over last year, and year over year, sales volume will be comparable, although profitability is expected to improve because of cost controls, he said. In 2009, he opened four new dealerships.

He recently sat down with Boston Business Journal reporter Lisa van der Pool to discuss business.

How is business going, post Cash-for-Clunkers?

Cash-for-Clunkers gave the industry a huge spike, but in lower-cost cars. The problem was that we weren’t prepared for Cash-for-Clunkers. The result was that we exhausted our inventory very quickly. And we had very few cars — at some dealerships we had no cars — left. At the same time nobody told the factories there was going to be a Cash-for-Clunkers program. So what happened with the economy, and car sales being down earlier in the year, is that the factories cut way back on production, because there was a glut of cars out there. Then all of a sudden, Cash-for-Clunkers comes along and exhausts the supply of cars. We delivered close to 1,200 cars.

What do you think of the government’s bailout of the automobile industry?

It’s too soon to judge. The domestic auto companies are in a mess. The executives are being changed almost daily. The

canceling of dealers is very troubling. They’ve had family businesses that will not be in existence any more. We are fortunate because we have been able to keep all of our dealerships — except Pontiac and Saturn.

Has advertising been a key part of your business strategy from the beginning?

We spend an awful lot of money advertising. The good news is that with the technology today we can monitor calls coming into dealerships, and people coming to our Web site. Because today about 80 percent of people, before they buy a car, they go online.

Are fuel-efficient cars here to stay?

Absolutely, positively. Everybody’s talking about bluetech diesels and hybrids. The name of the game is you’ve got to deliver great mileage. Everybody’s going to be in the hybrid business. I think it’s a great thing because we’re going to use up less oil.

What kind of car do you drive?

I change cars a lot because I love them. And I can. The people at all my dealerships hate to see me coming because they always know I’m going to take one of the nice cars. Right now, I’m driving a Bentley Coupe.

Three greatest passions?

My family, my business and automobiles. Because I love automobiles, I collect them.

How many cars do you have?

I used to have 25, now I have about 15 or 20 now. I have older cars, some from the ’50s. Part of the problem with collecting old cars is that they’re great to look at, but they drive terribly. But I like to drive, so I’ve been selling off some of the old cars that I have and replacing them with some exciting automobiles. For example I have a Mercedes-Benz SLR convertible, which is a car we sell. They ended the production on the car so I think it will be a very good investment. I have a new Lamborghini, which I think is a very exciting car to drive.

Trait that gives you a competitive edge?

Enthusiasm.

We were mere miles from our home in Connecticut, and I was freaking out for another 20. No, Mom, that is not a kit car! It’s the fastest production car on earth.

At that time, I knew I had seen one of just seven McLarens in the entire United States, and I knew I would never see one again. I found out later that a company in Danbury, about 35 minutes away, was importing all the F1s from the factory in Woking, England, proof that Connecticut was the center of the universe.

In 2005, I witnessed the second coming of the F1 at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, which was holding an exhibition of Ralph Lauren’s cars. I hardly moved from the velvet rope, despite Lauren’s impressive collection. Two sightings in one lifetime? This had to be the last time I would see an F1.

McLaren made roughly 100 road and race versions between 1993 and 1998, and it’s impossible to cite the exact number in the US today. Some people say there are more than 20; Chambers thinks there’s about a dozen. (And he should know. Jay Leno bought one after taking a ride with him.) Facebook groups and message boards claiming to document each McLaren try their hardest, but the owners of these cars rarely come up in the news unless one catches on fire or gets sold at auction for more than $4 million.

Herb Chambers Car Collection - McLaren F1

Last month, Chambers decided to drop his McLaren at his new BMW showroom in Sudbury, just 20 miles west of Boston. So I asked what anyone would in this rare moment, short of begging: can I please, please, please go for a ride? Chambers obliged, and on a sunny November I found myself holed into the F1′s left side, yanking the butterfly door shut, and trying to resist a hyper fit of feet stomping and flailing arms.

To be assaulted by such a high power-to-weight ratio, deafened by a 627 horsepower V-12, and stared at by every driver on the road is the car enthusiast’s reason for living. What, I wondered, would I do now for the rest of my life? The afterlife won’t be able to match being inside a McLaren at full-bore, running and running while the planet stands still.

For Herb and all the well-heeled car lovers with McLarens, here’s hoping, then, for a long life.

Herb Chambers – The value of confidence

Workers want a leader they can believe in

By Elizabeth Cooney, Globe Correspondent

HERB CHAMBERS WAS in the middle of expanding his car sales business when the recession hit, but he kept right on going with plans to open new dealerships and expand others. Now Chambers is hiring, and employees are glad they’re at a company that’s growing while their industry is gasping.

When the climate is gloomy, employees want company leaders to offer confidence, communication, and a sense that a bright future is being built.

Workers at these companies believe their professional fate is in good hands:

Herb Chambers Cos.: Twenty-five years ago, it wasn’t the norm for an auto dealer’s service department to wash the cars before returning them to customers, but Herb Chambers did it. “My feeling was a clean car always ran better than dirty one did,’’ said Chambers, head of his namesake business.

This year, going against the grain meant completing $50 million in new facilities. It’s that kind of thinking that has allowed Chambers auto dealerships to grow while other dealers are struggling or even closing down.

That sits well with employees, especially in the high-pressure world of auto sales. “I think it gives our people a great deal of confidence,’’ Chambers said. “They feel good about our company. They believe they are in the right place.’’

One after another, Chambers employees surveyed for Top Places cited the boss himself and the company’s growth as reasons for their satisfaction.

Not that Chambers has escaped the recession entirely. Sales are down 19 percent this year compared to last year, when the expansion was planned. But national numbers are down even more: from 30 to 34 percent.

“We never had a doubt about the future,’’ said Michael Hannafin, service director at Flagship Motorcars, a newly refurbished Chambers dealership in Lynnfield. “He’s a guy who believes in what he is doing. That trickles down.’’

Hannafin said Chambers recently pulled aside a manager who had reorganized a parts department, saying he wanted the rest of the company to copy the system. “You can’t measure what that does for an employee,’’ Hannafin said. “That guy was on cloud nine and the rest of his team was motivated, because he was singled out in a positive way by the CEO of the company.’’

Lexus RX 2010

Official Lexus Press Release:

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 19, 2008) – Lexus unveiled the all-new, next generation RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid at a press conference today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle that pioneered the car-based luxury utility vehicle segment when it launched in 1998, is completely redesigned and will continue to set new benchmarks in areas that have made it the best-selling luxury utility vehicle: innovation, styling, performance, utility and comfort.

At the heart of the new RX models are two improved powertrains. Entering its second generation, the RX 450h will feature an enhanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine that runs on a highly efficient Atkinson cycle. Combined with a new, more efficient inverter, the total system output will be 295 horsepower, 27 more horsepower than the current generation RX hybrid.

Another step in the Lexus Hybrid Drive’s evolution is the addition of two new systems that improve its efficiency. The first is an exhaust-heat recovery system that reduces engine warm-up time allowing it to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods. The result is an improvement in both fuel economy and emissions. The second is a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system that reduces engine pumping losses, which also helps to improve economy.

The RX 450h features a front-wheel hybrid drive or an electronically driven, part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drive system, which supplies the rear wheels with the optimal amount of torque as conditions demand. Unlike mechanical AWD systems that reduce fuel efficiency via added weight and friction, the RX 450h’s rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking, charging the hybrid battery more effectively.

The third generation RX 350 will be powered by an improved 275-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to an electrically controlled, sequential-shift six-speed transaxle. The all-wheel-drive version will feature an Active Torque Control AWD system that optimizes torque depending on driving conditions, resulting in improved efficiency and performance.

Both RX models feature a new, uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension that helps provide exceptional agility and control. Its distinctive design also allows for five percent more cargo volume and easier loading. To complement the new rear suspension and provide excellent dexterity and ride comfort, the front McPherson strut geometry was optimized.

The all-new RX models possess a number of Lexus-first technologies that enhance the ownership experience. An available Hard Disk Drive (HDD) navigation system has an all-new “Remote Touch” controller that is both intuitive and ergonomic. Positioned on the center console, Remote Touch is as natural to the driver’s hand as a computer mouse. It can also be customized to the desired level of haptic feedback. While RX will feature voice recognition as standard, the new navigation system will also include a new casual language voice-recognition system that acknowledges conversational commands. Standard XM® satellite-radio capability (requires subscription) is joined by XM NavTraffic and new NavWeather features.

The spacious five-passenger interior includes a new, thoughtfully constructed “dual-zone cockpit” design. This intuitive layout helps the driver navigate the advanced interior of the new RX, which features two distinct yet integrated zones: a “display zone” and an “operation zone.”

The “display zone” assists the driver via an eight-inch, navigation display that is set back in the dash for improved visibility. A white Organic LED multi-informational display ensures exceptional readability from a wide angle. An optional Heads-up Display reduces the need for excessive eye movement, and the use of high-intensity LEDs make the display bright enough to be read in direct sunlight.

The “operation zone” provides access and control to a large range of information through the available “Remote Touch” navigation controller and the steering-wheel-mounted multi-information switch.

The exterior of the all-new RX has a strong stance and powerful new body design with the goal of enhancing comfort and maneuverability. The inverted-trapezoid design in the front and the horizontally integrated rear are incorporated together via a pronounced shoulder along the RX’s profile. Stylish molding around the side windows and at the base of the doors provides low-profile strength. Standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels complement the exterior with a strong, sporty look, with optional 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels providing another styling cue. While it has increased in nearly every dimension, overall aerodynamic advancement was aided by a specially designed undertray, resulting in a segment-topping 0.32 coefficient of drag (Cd).

The RX 450h hybrid will have its own unique styling features, including an exclusive grille, hybrid badging including blue-trimmed Lexus logos, unique front bumper, a special 19-inch optional wheel design, blue-tinted headlamps and tail lamps, and optional LED headlamps.

The new RX is available with a selection of luxury and sport option packages, which include features like Lexus’ exclusive Mark Levinson® Surround Sound system, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, dynamic radar cruise control, and a Sports Package featuring a sport-tuned suspension.

The all-new RX will offer a wide-angle side view monitor. With a camera located under the passenger side-view mirror, the driver can check hard-to-view areas on the passenger side of the vehicle by simply selecting a button on the navigation screen or the steering wheel and view the camera image on the navigation screen.

True to its heritage, the RX’s active and passive safety systems continue to be among the vehicle’s most impressive features. Lexus’ available Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) seamlessly integrates individual systems like Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Hill Assist Control (HAC) and Traction Control (TRAC). It operates in a smooth proactive way via throttle, steering and braking to help prevent skids while cornering before the vehicle reaches its operating limits on slippery roads or other challenging conditions.

The available Pre-Collision System (PCS) relies on millimeter-wave radar technology to recognize a possible frontal collision and primes the brake assist and retracts the driver’s and front passenger’s seat-belt in anticipation of the crash. An intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is available with HID low- and high-beam headlamps on both models, while the RX 450h also offers the AFS with LED low-beam and Halogen high-beam headlamps. Both anticipate the vehicle’s location based on vehicle speed and steering angle, swiveling the front headlamps into the turn. An optional new automatic high-beam system detects light from oncoming vehicles, preceding vehicles or ambient sources and automatically switches from high to low beams.

Passive safety features include a class-leading 10 standard airbags on the new RX, including dual-stage driver and front-passenger airbags (including the Lexus exclusive twin-chamber front-passenger airbag), driver and front-passenger knee airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side airbags, and side-curtain airbags. It is also equipped with Lexus’ front-seat active headrests, designed to help reduce a possible whiplash injury when in certain lower speed collisions from the rear.

The all-new 2010 RX 350 will go on sale in February, while the 2010 RX 450h will reach dealerships nationwide in the spring.

The RX 450h hybrid will have its own unique styling features, including an exclusive grille, hybrid badging including blue-trimmed Lexus logos, unique front bumper, a special 19-inch optional wheel design, blue-tinted headlamps and taillamps, and optional LED headlamps.

The all-new 2010 RX 350 will go on sale next February, while the 2010 RX 450h will reach dealerships nationwide in the spring.

Written By Lillie Guyer | Automotive News

Lexus promoted the IS with a six-story “photomosaic” sign in Times Square.DETROIT — You didn’t have to attend last month’s Detroit auto show to watch Lexus Division introduce its redesigned LS 460 sedan. The flagship’s unveiling was as close as your computer screen.

Lexus broadcast the presentation via streaming video on its Web site, lexus.com/autoshow. Lexus also has provided programming from this year’s Chicago and Los Angeles auto shows.

It has similar plans for the New York show in April. The Web site also offers videos of Lexus vehicles and links to dealers.

The luxury division of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is an industry leader in interactive online marketing. Live Web content is emerging as an important medium for automakers to reach target customers and sell vehicles.

“With the convergence of technology to support these platforms, the bandwidth to carry content and the significant push to develop new content for these channels, online mediums have gone from niche to mainstream,” said Robin Pisz, Lexus’ national interactive marketing manager.

Viral influence
“Online provides new methods to reach the influential audience that participates in online conversations,” Pisz told Automotive News at the Detroit auto show. “They have the tendency to disseminate information throughout their own peer groups.”

Pisz declined to say what Lexus spends on interactive marketing. But she called it “the way of the future.” Interactive marketing not only conveys product information, she said, but also influences consumer preferences, creates buzz and gets customers into Lexus showrooms.

Lexus’ online marketing activities also include chat groups and forums. They provide content for digital audio players — so-called podcasts — and for cell phones. The interactive efforts are integrated to boost their overall effectiveness, Lexus marketers say.

In addition to the LS 460, Lexus is giving the redesigned IS sport sedan series a big interactive push.

To help launch the 2006 IS 250 and 350, Lexus executives have done podcast and online interviews. In a live chat on the automotive Web site Edmunds.com, Lexus General Manager Bob Carter joked to prospective IS customers that “you’ll drive like you just stole it.”

Last fall, Lexus promoted the IS with an online sweepstakes that attracted 67,000 entries. It invited Web users to submit personal photos. The photos that Lexus selected became part of a “photomosaic” projected on an electronic sign in New York’s Times Square. Lexus called the mosaic the world’s largest digital display.

No blogs
Unlike other automakers, notably General Motors, Lexus does not use Web logs, or blogs, as part of its interactive marketing. Instead, Pisz said, the company is building Web pages that, for example, will link owners of Lexus hybrids.

Deborah Wahl Meyer, Lexus Division’s vice president of marketing, said in an e-mail interview that her company will “continue to support all the new media opportunities.”

“We will look to find unique ways to reach our customers through traditional means or more unexpected channels,” Meyer said. “Our brand must continue to find the right touch points to drive engagement and sales.”

Buy Lexus Online will keep you up to date as to new advertising strategies on the Lexus forefront!

The 2009 Lexus ES 350 should see no major changes after adding a new trim level to the lineup in 2008. The Pebble Beach Edition will offer three exclusive colors and seven-spoke 17-inch wheels along with special badging and interior trim. The ES remains essentially a luxury version of the Toyota Camry; Lexus is Toyota’s premium division. The ES 350 is powered by a 272-hp 3.5-liter V6. The sole transmission is a 6-speed automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an anti-skid system, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, rear side airbags, and front knee airbags. Lexus’s Pre-Collision System, which readies airbags, seat belts, and brakes when sensors detect a skid or imminent crash, is optional. It’s paired with adaptive cruise control.

Wood interior trim and a sunroof are included, but leather upholstery is optional. Other options include the Ultra Luxury Package with a “panorama” glass roof, a navigation system with a rear view camera, and steering-linked headlamps. This report is based on evaluations of the 2008 ES 350.
